How to Secure a Child Contact Arrangement

The court encourages parents to reach an agreement between themselves wherever possible. Our solicitors are skilled negotiators who can help you find common ground, focusing on a solution that provides stability and consistency for your child.

Reaching an Amicable Agreement

We can help you negotiate a Parenting Plan directly with your ex-partner or guide you through the mediation process, aiming to avoid the stress and cost of court.

Making Your Agreement Legal

If you reach an agreement, we can make it legally binding by drafting a Consent Order. If you cannot agree, we can apply to the court for a Child Arrangement Order.

Common Questions About Child Contact

Do I have to go to court to arrange contact?

No, and it is actively encouraged that you don't. The court expects parents to try to reach an agreement through direct discussion or mediation first. A court application is a last resort when all other attempts to agree have failed.

My ex-partner is stopping me from seeing my child. What can I do?

Unless there is a genuine risk of harm to the child, you should not be prevented from having contact. If this is happening, you can apply to the court for a Child Arrangement Order to formalise contact. If an existing order is being ignored, you can apply to the court to have it enforced.

How does the court decide on contact arrangements?

The court's only priority is the child's welfare. It uses a 'Welfare Checklist' to consider all the child's circumstances, including their wishes and feelings. The court's starting point is that a child benefits from having a meaningful relationship with both parents.
